Five Caribbean Home Remedies For the Common Cold/Flu

It’s that time of the year again where getting the cold is near enough inevitable.


Thankfully, I have learned a few useful home remedies that can help you alleviate your symptoms and get you back to normal. Below are some of the most popular remedies used in Caribbean homes. Note that you should always consult a professional before treating any ailments.


1. Various Herbal tea

Some herbal tea, also known a bush tea in the Caribbean is widely used to get rid of a cold. Herbal tea such as Cerasee and lemongrass are great. You can easily find these in a store near you in teabag form if you are not able to grow or get them in their most natural state.


2. Ginger tea

Ginger tea is known for its anti-inflammatory properties. It is widely used in Jamaica for Nausea but added with honey is said to be great for treating coughs.


3. Vicks Vaporub

This is one of my all-time favourites. You can rub it on your chest and under your feet for coughs, on your nose to relieve congestion, and on your throats to relieve sore throats.

4. Honey and lime

Honey and lime mixed in warm water is really effective in soothing sore throats. You may also add garlic for increased effectiveness. The lime is said to dry the congestion, while the honey soothes

5. Rum and black coffee

Steaming hot coffee laced with white rum is said to be a tried and proven method of expelling flu-like symptoms for decades. Be sure to drink this just before going to bed and wrap yourself up tight under a thick blanket to sweat out the fever.
