In this day and age, having a realistic career plan is an important part of our personal growth and development.
During a part of my life when I was searching for a job I could truly see myself doing, I used to often get phone calls from different job agencies telling me about potential jobs. Asked if I was interested in these jobs and my answer was always yes.
I not only answered yes to be polite, but I also felt like I wasn't at a point in my life to pick and choose which job I want. As a result, I was opened to accepting whatever was being offered to me, even if it meant having a job I had little or no interest in.
As I get older, I realised more and more how important it is to have a realistic career plan in place as it is an important part of our personal growth and development. It helps us to manage the direction of our career, the job, skills and knowledge we may need, how to get them and how we can secure our dream job. Don't just accept a job because you believe you will not get something else or because it pays well. Below highlights a few reasons why it is important to have a realistic career plan.
Career planning helps us to grow
Our personal growth and development are very important, they help us to become the best version of ourselves. Without goals to strive for, how will we know what we are working towards, better yet, how will we know how to achieve that goal. By planning for the future and developing a timeline for accomplishing the things we want, whether that is to own a business or become a marketing director, whatever the case may be, you will find that having a career plan is an effective way to ensure you never lose motivation along the way.
Do you want to work forever?
I certainly do not. Having a career plan helps to give us a much longer view, of course unless your dream job is something you want to do every day of your life. If you are planning on retiring one day, jetting off to nothing but relaxation after years of hard work, then a career plan will definitely help you to determine the steps needed to smoothly transition into retirement when that time comes.
Career planning may intimidate some people due to the fact they are unsure about the route they would like to take decades down the road. However, instead of setting a intense list of things to follow, your career plan should be viewed simply as a tool to get what you want. As our wants and needs change, so should our career plan to accommodate each change. It should be flexible enough to change when our personal ambitions and goals do.
